Watch Dating Guide

One cannot rely on the hallmark alone to date a watch since cases and movements can be interchanged. Some knowledge about the design and development of watches is also required.

The following will help with dating a watch:

Arcaded dial                                Unlikely to be later than about 1780
Lever escapement                      Very rare before 1815
Engine-turned case                     Rare before 1830
Arabic chapter-ring                     Mostly 1790-1810
Flat (rather than convex) dial     After 1800
Subsidiary seconds dial              Very rare before 1800
