The polescreen was made to shield a seated young lady from the heat of a roaring fire, and for this reason has ceased to be anything but a decorative piece of occasional furniture. They are therefore god value. The above mahogany example still contains the original silkwork panel which would have been worked by the woman of the household. It has become common practice to remove the panel and use the base to support the surface of a tripod table.
